Hand in Hand is a Public Charitable Trust registered in the year 2002 with an initial focus on child labour elimination, education, and the empowerment of women. The organisation has been in operation since 1988 in Kancheepuram District, Tamil Nadu, India. We envisage an integrated strategy to address the challenges of poverty and underdevelopment. It aims at building self-reliance of disadvantaged groups by alleviating poverty through sustained income generating programmes. Hand in Hand sees the status of the local natural environment as key in the development process. Since poor and marginalised people lack the resources needed to reduce the negative effects of a degraded environment, a damaged natural environment will hit the most vulnerable groups of society the hardest. In this light, the links between environmental change and human development form an important priority area for Hand in Hand.
