Trade Lead Description:
Brazil is to auction off wind power projects later this year in an attempt to increase its use of the renewable energy source for generating electricity. The first ever public sale of wind power in the country will take place on November 25th, conducted by the government, the Brazilian energy ministry revealed. Based on existing technology, ministers estimate that the South American nation has the potential to generate 140,000MW of wind power, which represents ten times the electricity produced by Itaipu, a hydroelectric project which includes the world’s largest power plant of its type, according to the Latin American Herald Tribune. Official figures show that in 2001, wind power accounted for 0.1 per cent of Brazil’s total energy consumption, or 559GW of electricity, the news provider reports.
